Plate-Loaded Machines
Plate-loaded machines are loaded with standard Olympic plates instead of a built-in weight stack. With fewer moving parts and no cables, they are very durable, and they accept much heavier loads than most selectorized machines, which makes them a favourite with serious lifters and bodybuilding gyms.
Many of the most respected designs, including Hammer Strength's Iso-Lateral range, are plate-loaded. On a used plate-loaded machine, the parts that matter are the pivot bearings, the weight horns and the upholstery. We inspect all three.
